Text Box: PRINTERS

Choosing a printer is not a simple business these days. With so many models on offer it can be very difficult to decide which one is right for your needs.

SOME IMPORTANT POINTS TO CONSIDER

Duty Cycle. To avoid disappointment and excess wear it is important to buy a print that will cope adequately with the amount of work you intend to give it. Consider the total amount of pages that it will process in a typical month and buy a machine whose duty cycle will cope with that throughput.

What Version of Windows Are You Using. If you are using Windows 95, 98, ME or NT you will be very restricted in your choice as most new printers do not support these operating systems.

Are You Using Other Operating Systems. If you use non Windows based programs, MSDOS, Unix, Linux, Apple-Mac etc. it is important that you ascertain whether printer driver software is included or available for these programs before purchasing the printer. Some printers only have Windows drivers included.

INKJET, LASER or MULTI-FUNCTION?

Inkjet printers are essential for photographic reproduction as the depth of colour achieved is usually better that most laser printers.

Advantages are - low initial purchase prices, smaller footprint than a laser, better results with photographic quality printout.

Disadvantages are - higher running costs, smearing or running of printouts in damp or wet conditions, generally slower than colour laser printers.

Laser printers are now the most widely used printers for business.

Advantages are - speed, lower running costs, top quality monochrome printout, good office quality colour reproduction and bigger monthly duty cycles.

Disadvantages are - higher initial purchase price

Multi-function printers are available in both inkjet and laser formats and combine printing with copying, scanning and faxing depending on the model.

Advantages are - space savings in a small office environment, only one set of consumables to buy.

Disadvantages are - potential loss of all functions at times of failure.
